This and That...

What's not to like about this card (for my birthday)?  It is definitely me!

I especially like that it had enclosed a tea bag...and a lovely scripture verse!

I received this lovely Tea Pot from one of my daughters....it is so photographic.

I had to get two shots of it.

This bottle...crammed with all sorts of fun "necessary" items was a result of another daughter's creative genius!

I have lots of birthdays and anniversaries to keep up with...so another super talented daughter made this~  now I will never forget these important dates!

These nautical themed note cards were dimensional and layered....really cool.  Can't wait to pen my "thank yous" with these!

 My twin sister knows me pretty well...and got me these aqua brushes for my water color and a new book!  Yay!  I love to water color and have been very impressed with these brushes.  Stay tuned for future projects using these.

Oh, I was blessed with tea to try out!  Isn't the Trader Joe's tea packaged creatively?

My older sister gave me this beautiful fabric covered tea caddy/tray.  I just love it.  Doesn't it look like it belongs on a front porch?  Oh...and do you see the Brookside chocolates.  Ummmm.....a total addiction.  Am I alone here?  I didn't think so.

Yes, this is a sinking Titanic tea infuser, made by the same folks that brought us  Mr. Tea.   A great conversation piece, and a great infuser as well.  Now, I need to sit down with all of my tea and chocolates and do some letter writing!

For my final Mother's day and Birthday highlights...how about some watermelon soap?

Oh, and on my birthday....I got to play a small role in the musical "Little Women"!  Such a fun time.

Snailmail to carry you through the winter!

Letter Writing Tales from a 1920's Home...snowed in!

I don't know about you...but I'm cold.  Really cold.  I live in an old 1920's farm house which refuses

to stay warm, even with all of our attempts!  But...with a mug of hot chocolate and some cheery stationery...I think I might actually make it through this wintery winter.

Yes...that's a RED ROOF!  Haha...the sweet little farmhouse that refuses to stay warm.

This is Expresso who is coming with me to check out the mailbox.  This is her first winter and she loves the snow!  She is such a cutie.

Here is my completely DRAB mailbox!  I am open to DIY suggestions for fixing this problem.  Send me Pins, websites, ANYTHING that will help me !  You know that a mailbox is a house for all my precious letters.  So, it goes to say...it should be GRAND!

What about this cheery , vibrant stationery that I picked up at Walmart a few years ago?  Doesn't this turn your thoughts toward spring...and hope?

Tuesday Tea Time and Letters... in Pink!

THE SETTING:  '

This little ensemble is not a match.  And do you know what?  I like it like that.  It makes it all so much more interesting, doesn't it?   But that is ok!  Really.  Haha..."matchie, matchie" is a thing of the past, so the designers tell us!  The tea pot has a nice winter feel to it...the cup and saucer shares much of the green and plum colors.  Perfect!

We have been having such cold weather...but I can not complain too loudly as I know that other regions are  more frigid than ours.  Regardless of our temperatures...we can all enjoy a nice cup of hot tea...or coffee...or cocoa and settle ourselves down and write a few letters.

So grab a mug or a pot of tea, and join me as we write our letters today!

Rainy Days...and Letter Writing

Rainy Days are good for....

Here is a view out of my bedroom window...looking out over our little out building (which is a library!)  It is such a rainy day and the mist hangs gently over the fields.  Does the change in weather affect you?  It certainly does me. Cold , rainy, (or snowy) days just make me nostalgic and I yearn to slow down and enjoy  the experience.  

Shortly after the above picture was snapped, the skies grew even darker, so dark that I decided to light a candle and to begin a letter.

I have found myself a bit behind on of my letters...so  I need plenty of rainy days.

And thankfully it rained most of the day!

Snail Mail and little things...

It's the small things in life that we neglect...

Life gets hectic.  We, as Americans, supposedly have the hardest time of all when it comes to slowing down, and relaxing.  Most of us keep tight schedules which allows little time for  thoughtful repose much less to sit down and thoughtfully compose a hand written letter.  Vacations help to remind us of our need to slow down, to take in our surroundings... to notice the color of the sky...the smells that are in the air...new sounds all around... It is time to notice the little things around us. 

 I was impressed with the shells while we were there.  I was mainly interested in the very small ones ( I wanted to leave the bigger ones for the youngsters who were collecting with their sand pails in tow!).  What an unlimited variety of colors, shapes, sizes!  To consider  the possible journey each shell  may have taken to have  washed up on the shores of NC... well, that can just sort of stagger the imagination.  Literally it is incredible.  Some were huge, others were so tiny that they were less than a centimeter, yet perfectly formed and beautiful.  Little things.

Little things are important in the large scheme of life.

We have been blessed this week to have enjoyed this view from our balcony deck!  What a sight it has been, a definite change from the rolling  hills and pastoral scenes of the Piedmont of Virginia.

My mobile letter writing kit and my favorite rocker awaits. 

I have taken advantage of the down time to pen several letters...

Don't for get to bring your favorite Vacation read!   I have selected the Illustrated Letters of Jane Austen.

I discovered a small book store in the village and found this wonderful little stand with the Leuchtturm 1917 journals and planners, it was literally hiding behind the postcard stands in a corner of the store.  I selected one off the shelf after much contemplation.  This holds a world of yet to be written. journal entries, notes,thoughts, sketches, whatever comes to mind.  Hot Pink...oh yeah!

I also did some sniffing around in some old thrift  and antique stores and found these lovely boxes full of vintage postcards.  I only had time to go through the box on the left.  Ugh , I hated leaving the other one untouched.  Dear Reader, I left it for you!  It was so entertaining reading the notes written from the 1920's,30's and 40's.  I will post more on my finds at a later date.

I also brought with me a selection of letters to reread while on vacation.  Oh, and "of course"  that is NOT a rubberband you  see encasing those lovely letters....it is a delicate ribbon...oh, ok.  it is a rubberband unfortunately.  I wish I had  a lovely lacey ribbon, but alas I secured  this collection of letters at the last moment before departure.

This brings to mind a quote:

Do you reread letters?  If not, you are missing out on a real treat.  The above letters are a collection from a young friend of mine.  They tell a bit of a story of her life over a period of time.   I encourage you to save letters, you won't regret it.

This week has taught me many things.  I need to make more room in my life for contemplation.  For little, but important things.  Letter writing is one of them.  Take time for the little things in your life as well.

Inspiration for Letter Writing

I find  that I need inspiration for letter writing.  Do you?   I need quiet, I need order, and I need a sense of wonder.  Rainer Maria Rilke stated, "Starting is so beautiful..."  What do you need to get started in your letter writing experience?

Alexandra Stoddard, in her book Gift of a Letter,  states:

I always  try to have a small bud vase with at least one fresh flower placed in front of me on my writing desk for inspiration...A flower is alive and fragile, and reminds me of both the beauty and the mortality of life...

She goes on to say:

There is a strong aesthetic dimension to letters that goes beyond selected words and unique handwriting.  The quality, color and design of the paper used, the width of the pen nib , the color if ink , the color of engraving, the type of stationery, the sealing wax ...the selection  of stamps...all tell a very personal story. These are further aesthetic and physical elements we use to communicate our feelings in a letter:  the size, shape and weight of the envelope, the color, the tissue lining, the scent, the hand-painted border, the smoothness and color of paper--all add to the pleasure of writing, receiving and enjoying a letter. 

So, it seems it would not hurt to have all of your letter writing materials at hand for when the mood strikes!  Try to  have a  variety of  stationery, stamps , seals, wax, and all of the wonderful writing paraphernalia  in easy reach.  This will facilitate letter writing when  you want to sit down and correspond!


Have  you ever tried writing in a new surrounding?  I have a beautiful writing desk that I  treated myself to years ago.  It is romantic in style and just beckons me to  sit down and write a letter.  I love my little writing desk!  But sometimes I  feel the need for a different environment.  I would encourage you to find a "secret garden" if you have one.  I don't have one...yet, but I do have a sweet  outdoor swing where I have sat before and written letters on my lap.  I also love to sit on my porch and write letters!

And then there is my most recent  inspiring   setting...the gorgeous Atlantic ocean!  Who CAN'T get inspired by  the wonder of the crashing waves, the smell of the salty air, the sounds of the sea gulls...the sand between your toes...?  There I am...with my bag of writing utensils...penning a letter with the amazing  ocean at my feet.
