The Greatest Love Letter

Dear Pen Friend

Our paths have crossed because of our mutual interest in what is deemed by many to be a sub-culture of our society  today  and in what is more and more often disparagingly referred to as “snail mail”.   We live in a world that is revolving at such a fast pace of electronic gadgets, technological wizardry, and virtual relationships that often leaves a person feeling totally isolated, disconnected and alone.  And yet,  people will boast that they may have hundreds, or even thousands of virtual  “friends”.  Critics scoff at the notion that there would be any such individual that would find the activity of a hand written letter a necessity in our world today.  Obviously, those critics have never delved into the world of snail mail!

Since beginning my blog,  “The Lost Art Of Letter-Writing …Revived!”  several years ago, I have been amazed with the creativity and passion I have seen exhibited  in this letter writing world!  There are  beautiful cards, myriads of swaps, gorgeously and creatively decorated envelopes (mail art) , witty, charmingly written letters  penned in beautiful calligraphy or scrawled in the best penmanship the writer can muster.  All this to satisfy a need to communicate in a slower, more thoughtful and meaningful way and possibly to escape the drudgeries of life.
As delightful as it is to receive a   hand- written letter, thoughtfully prepared, and sent with  the highest intentions, it cannot fully satisfy life’s longings.  However, there is  an  unparalleled  message written and  preserved for our reading. Many have compared the Holy Bible to the greatest love letter ever written for humanity.  It answers man’s deepest need of being made right with God.
This “letter”, the Bible, has been sent to everyone in the world, (John 3:16) but sadly remains unopened by so many! Think of it!  An unopened letter!   If one were to open it, he would find that it  has much to tell us about our lost condition and why we have such longings of the heart , longings this world can never satisfy.     A great place to begin reading  is the book of John.

In letter writing, I like to “get to the point” fairly quickly and I like to fully inform, so let me share a few verses to get you started.
·         We need to be saved.  Romans 3:10- As it is written , There is none righteous, no, not one.
Romans 3:23- For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.  Romans 6:23 –For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
·         We cannot save ourselves.   Titus 3:5- Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
·         God’s Son died to save us. Romans 5:8-But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
·         God’s Word shows you how to be saved.  Isaiah 55:6-7 – Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:  Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.  John 3:16-For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting  life. Romans 10:9- That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus , and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Just as we could not conceive of  letter from a lover going unopened by its intended recipient , the same is true of this “letter” from God, what a travesty  that would be.  Why not open it now before it is too late.
