Children Love To Receive Mail!

Mimi's  Book Club!

We all know that WE love to receive mail, right?  So it would go without saying , that children  also love to receive mail as well.  I haven't been as consistent with this as I would like to be .  I have 5 grand children -- the oldest being only 3!!!  But I say it's never too young to start the mail box relationship.

Just today I was driving down our country road and I saw  a friend of mine with her young 5 year old niece hand- in- hand at the end of her drive way.  She was waiting for my car to pass by then , little Brittany scampered across the road , obviously to get the mail or to put something in the mail box.  I observed this truly heart warming scene with great interest  in my rear- view mirror.

The mail box , in a child's mind can be a mysterious place.  We can place an envelope in it...and for $.47 that one small item can travel to Timbuktu or Kalamazoo...and maybe...if we are patient ( and a bit lucky) we might be on the receiving end of this mysterious adventure.

To get me a bit more motivated on my mailings with my grands the idea of "Mimi's Book Club" surfaced in my mind.  This was an idea mentioned to me by my friend , Elaine.  (Thank you , Elaine!) What this amounts to is a colorful , interesting  envelope stuffed with age appropriate books and a cheerful letter, perhaps commenting on one of the books.

This is one of the envelopes...I mailed three of them.  It arrived in good shape!

This little guy, does exactly what we do when we receive some personal mail...inspect it carefully, running our fingers over it, oohing and ahhhhing... delighting in mail just for us!

Now for the contents!!!  A few classics (The Runaway Bunny) and a family classic:  But Not the Hippopatomus...and another one, somewhere!  He seems to be enjoying his first selection of  Mimi's Book Club, doesn't he?

I am  fortunate that  our village has a "Friends of the Library" book store which sells their children's books for $.10 a piece!  My daughter in law was excited to see the Little Toot book in the selection, she said it was a favoite of hers when she was a youngster.  All in all, I believe that all of the grands enjoyed receiving their packages in the mail, and Mimi had fun assembling them and mailing them.  Oh, I almost forgot to mention that  I sent each large envelope stuffed with 4-5 books each (hardbacks)  media mail (book rate) which  only cost about $2.90 each.  Of course the USPS said that it could take 10-14 days, but do you know what?  They arrived  in 4 days...almost like going Priority rate! Three cheers for the USPS!!!

I hope this inspires some of you to start the mail box tradition with someone you know from the  younger generation.  Have fun!
